Sustainable Technologies Wins Award for Clean Harbors Energy Efficiency Retrofit

Sustainable Technologies energy efficiency project for Clean Harbors has been selected by the Interior Lighting Campaign (ILC) as a 2016 award winner for the Highest Percentage of Annual Savings for Troffer Lighting Retrofits – Medium Project. Winners will be recognized at the BOMA 2016 International Conference and Expo. The upgrades will save 11,000 kWh annually, the equivalent energy usage of 1 home, achieving a 74% energy reduction compared to existing usage.

Background: Clean Harbors is a leading environmental, energy and industrial service company with over 35 years in business and a network of over 400 service locations in North America and growing.

Challenge: This particular Clean Harbors location is a 30,000 sq ft warehouse rail spur transfer facility located in San Jose. It requires a lot of lighting and the electrical bills were quite high. To keep expenses down a solution was needed.

Solution & Benefits: Sustainable Technologies performed an energy efficiency audit and installed LED lighting and motion sensors in the warehouse and efficient outdoor floodlights in the parking lot. By switching to LEDs, the company will reduce energy consumption and save over $15,000 in the first year and over the next decade will save over $200,000 in electrical costs with a ROI in the project in the 2nd year. The lights themselves are expected to last beyond 100,000 hours (11 years) which makes it an excellent investment. The lighting inside the work areas is illuminated with 20,000 lumens high bay lighting. Sustainable Technologies was able to navigate the utility rebate process to reduce 25% off the installation price, passing the savings onto the customer.
